The City & its Castle

The largest gathering of people dressed as Robin Hood

At around noon on April 14th 2007 one hundred and sixty five (165) folks of all ages set a new World Record for the largest ever gathering of costumed Robin Hoods.

The colourful event took place around the world-famous Robin Hood Statue below Nottingham Castle and was staged by the locally-based building society "The Nottingham" who recently introduced a stylish new version of their traditional Robin Hood logo.

The record attempt was officially monitored by an adjudicator from the Guinness Book of Records and the
present day Sheriff of Nottingham, City Councillor Jeannie Packer also attended in her civic robes.

The World Wide Robin Hood Society notified everyone on our extensive mailing list and the website was bombarded with global messages of good luck and support for the initiative. Many e-mails of good-will came from the USA including this one from California:-
"While we are a long way from you, being in California,we'll be there in thought! And to make the connection even better I'll be sure to wear a Robin Hood pin tommorrow along with something green.Best wishes and good luck. I hope it gets on the international media so we can see the turnout or post it on your website so we can read about it! Hooray for The Nottingham and their link to our favorite English archer!"

Invitation from The Nottingham Building Society to join in with their World Record Attempt.

Hi Bob,

I'd like to invite you and the members of the Society to our world record attempt on Saturday 14 April. We will be trying to break the world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Robin Hood. In order to qualify as a world record, we need at least 100 people dressed in a Robin Hood hat, green or brown tunic, trousers or tights and suitable footwear. We're meeting at the statue of Robin Hood outside the castle at 11.30. It would be great if you could come and support the attempt as I think it will be great publicity for Robin Hood and the city of Nottingham.

As soon as I know any further details, I shall let you know. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please let me know.

Kind regards,

Will Howell
Nottingham Building Society

Further notes:

In order to achieve a World Record, at least one hundred people need to attend and they must be wearing a minimum outfit consisting of:

  • A Robin Hood hat (Felt is fine, you can buy these on the day)
  • A Green or Brown Tunic or Tabard (We have some of these to lend if you do not have one)
  • Green or Brown Trousers or Tights!
  • Suitable footwear, preferably brown boots, (Otherwise wear dark trainers and we will wrap them in Hessian).
