Joan was born in Widnes, Lancashire and has lived and worked in Nottingham since 1972. She is the fourth woman to hold the historic post of Sheriff of Nottingham. |

She trained as a science teacher in Liverpool and met her husband John there – they were both students at the time. Joan had a long break in her teaching career to raise their two sons, ‘experimenting’ with other jobs such as working in a local playgroup and working in the Queens Medical Centre as a photographer in the Public Health Laboratory. When Joan returned to teaching she worked mainly with children with special educational needs, and has maintained an interest in this area of education. Joan aims to focus on this area whilst in office. Joan’s main interests are reading (almost anything), walking (but definitely slowing down), travel (enjoying the experiences of new places and cultures) and following the careers of her two sons as a proud Mum. Joan was elected to the City Council in 1995 and is currently Councillor for Lenton Ward. She is presently Chair of Licensing Committee and previously was Vice-Chair of Environment Committee so she does have concerns regarding pollution and waste management and their long term effects.
