Record Breakers!!

Nottingham Castle's bid to host the world's largest gathering of Robin Hoods is a huge success

On Saturday 8 March 2008, 1119 people gathered at Nottingham Castle dressed as Robin Hood and broke the world record for the number of people dressed as Robin Hood in one place at one time.

Robin Hoods from as far afield as Australia and Canada took part in the biggest mass gathering of our favourite outlaw ever seen and easily passed the previous record of 606 Robins set last year.

The Sheriff of Nottingham led a parade from the nearby Canal House pub as the participants gathered on Nottingham's Castle Green in a huge display of Lincoln green!

The World Wide Robin Hood Society was amongst a number of Nottingham organisations who were supporting the event and joining in with the fun.

Participants had to meet minimum costume requirements of a hat with a feather, a green or brown tunic and trousers and leather footwear.

Even the Sheriff put tradition aside and dressed in a Robin Hood costume specially designed and made by Nottingham City Council's Children's Services costume department.

Participants had to meet minimum costume requirements of a hat with a feather, a green or brown tunic and trousers and leather footwear.

Participants were entertained by a medieval band and a host of prizes were awarded for things like the youngest and oldest Robins and the best outfit.

The tension mounts as the final count approaches
Nottingham Castle manager Dave Green said: "The number of people coming has been steady all morning, we hoped the cold weather would mean there would be a rush of people later in the morning.

"It has been worth it for the atmosphere and the fact that people are enjoying it."

"It is one thing to have people agree to a good idea but quite another to have them make the effort on the day, especially when it is so cold. I'm very, very pleased."

He added: "We did this to bring people together, to reflect all the people we have in the city.

It's a new world record!!
